In 2003, Alberta Liberal leader Kevin Taft released a policy on auto insurance calling for public insurance based on the British Columbia model (ie, not no-fault). The Liberals campaigned on that position.
In 2008, the Liberals changed their policy somewhat, claiming they would ‘review’ public insurance as one of several options for the province.
In today’s Edmonton Journal, the Liberal position seems to have changed again. David Swann used reacted to the court decision upholding the cap on soft tissue injury claims to call for public auto insurance.
I support public insurance. I think it’s worked in other provinces. But given their history on this issue over the last few years, I’m not sure the Liberal position is something anyone can take to the bank.
